Orofacial myofunctional therapy · Arkansas · Telehealth

Breathe better. Sleep deeper. Live healthier.

Orofacial myofunctional therapy helps you — or your child — reach optimal health through proper tongue posture, proper swallowing, a strong lip seal, and nasal breathing.

The therapy

What is orofacial myofunctional therapy?

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is a series of exercises that teaches patients how to chew, swallow, and breathe correctly. It works on correcting bad habits that lead to poor muscle patterns — patterns that can affect total body health.

The exercises are designed to work in a hierarchy, starting simple and advancing forward as muscle tone and function increase — like physical therapy for the face, mouth, and airway.

Nasal breathing

The nose is the airway you want, day and night. Therapy re-establishes nasal breathing as the primary pattern.

Tongue posture

A full tongue resting on the palate supports the airway, the bite, and facial growth — we retrain it there.

Lip seal

Lips together at rest, without strain. A strong, easy seal normalizes freeway space and quiets the mouth.

Swallowing & chewing

Swallowing with the back teeth together and chewing on both sides — the patterns your muscles were built for.

What we work toward
Establish nasal breathing as the primary function
Obtain lip seal and normalized freeway space
Create a palatal tongue rest position
Swallow with the posterior teeth in occlusion
Correct excessive dysfunctional habits
Build proper chewing and drinking patterns
Develop proper facial muscle patterns

When to start

The right age is earlier than you think — and never too late.

4+
Early evaluation

Children as young as four benefit from an evaluation to catch causative factors — an airway obstruction or a tongue-tie — that need intervention early.

5
Habit elimination

Age five is an ideal time to begin a program that helps eliminate harmful sucking habits before they shape the bite.

7–8
Full therapy program

Children of seven to eight are strong candidates to begin a complete orofacial myofunctional therapy program.

Teens & adults
Any age works

Teens and adults of all ages achieve successful, long-term results — it is never too late to retrain the pattern.

My daughter has been seeing Arkansas Orofacial Therapy for about a year now. The therapist has been so great with her — encouraging, praising, and such a huge help. She is thorough and treats her with such respect, and immediately sends the week's exercises by email after every session. I am amazed at the change in her jawline and facial structure in just the first six months. Punctual, works around our crazy schedule, and has been super flexible when issues arise. Thank you so much for the service and support you provide your patients!
